About the Project
Paternus is conceived as a platform for studying paternalism in politics, institutions, and the digital environment.
Why the project was created
Most material on paternalism either reduces the subject to a set of political slogans or discusses it within narrow academic disciplines. Paternus connects these levels: it gives the reader a clear entry point into the topic and at the same time shows how the dispute about paternalism looks in philosophy, law, economics, medicine, digital design, and research practice.
How the portal is organized
The public part of the site is organized so that a visitor can move from basic definitions to complex cases and models:
- first, to understand what paternalism is and what forms it takes;
- then to see the historical and philosophical foundations of the dispute;
- after that, to move on to modern cases, criticism, and the digital context;
- and finally, to study the formal models in the "Paternalism and Mathematics" section.
What sets Paternus apart
Instead of a one-dimensional condemnation or apology for paternalism, the project poses three questions:
- When does intervention genuinely protect a person from substantial harm?
- When does it covertly substitute management for autonomy?
- How can these processes be described not only in moral categories but also through measurable models?
Who the site is for
The platform is intended for students, researchers, public-policy specialists, designers of digital services, doctors, HR practitioners, and everyone working with the question: where does care end and control begin?
The project's two circuits
Alongside the public encyclopedia, the site has a closed research zone at /research. It is intended for collaborative work with materials, notes, tags, and comments. In this way the site serves not only as a showcase of content but also as a working environment for accumulating knowledge.
Below are brief excerpts from the encyclopedic and normative literature that set the terminological background.
